How are clearance windows determined?
Clearance windows are based on the fare purchased, the travel zone, and the Aeroplan Elite Status of the member from whose account the credits will be deducted.
For example, a Super Elite Member and a 50K Member are travelling together on the same reservation.
- If the Super Elite Member requests an upgrade for both passengers, the clearance window will be that of a Super Elite Member.
- If the 50K Member requests an upgrade for both passengers, the clearance window will be that of a 50K Member.
- If each passenger requests their own upgrade, the clearance window will be based on the highest Aeroplan Elite status (i.e. the Super Elite Status in this example)
Why did my upgrade not clear when my clearance window opened?
There’s a specific allotment of upgradable space available per flight. Once space is gone, all non-confirmed eUpgrade requests are waitlisted and transferred to the airport standby list for assessment once check-in closes for the flight.
Can I make an upgrade request close to my departure date?
All eUpgrade requests made within 36 hours of flight departure are waitlisted, regardless of whether there is eUpgrade space available. They are then assessed at the airport once check-in closes for the flight.
Clearance on the day of departure after check-in closes is determined by a combination of many things, such as the cabin, the fare purchased and the Aeroplan Elite Status.
At the airport, the standby list is prioritized first by cabin, and then by highest Aeroplan Elite Status within that cabin.
The order of priority as relates to the cabin is:
- eUpgrade requests from Premium Economy to Business
- eUpgrade requests from Economy to Business
- eUpgrade requests from Economy to Premium Economy
Elite members who can’t be accommodated in Business Class will be offered Premium Economy before eUpgrade requests from Economy to Premium Economy are processed.
I’m travelling with a companion. How does that affect our waitlist priority at the airport?
If you request an eUpgrade for a travel companion, your companion’s priority at the airport will be based on how you booked your reservation.
If a Super Elite Member and a 50K Member are travelling together on the same reservation.
- Regardless of who requested the upgrade, the priority on the airport standby list for both members will be based on the highest Aeroplan Elite status (i.e. the Super Elite Status, in this example).
- The lower-tiered member will benefit from an elevated priority but will fall below others with the same status as the higher-tiered member (i.e. the 50K Member would fall below other Super Elites).
If a Super Elite Member and a 50K Member are travelling together but on separate reservations.
- Regardless of who requested the upgrade, their priority on the airport standby list will be based on each member’s individual Aeroplan Elite status.
Economy Basic fares are ineligible for eUpgrade usage.
eUpgrades apply for one-way travel on eligible scheduled flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Express or Air Canada Rouge.

eUpgrades are available to all Aeroplan Elite Status Members. Members who do not hold Aeroplan Elite Status can use eUpgrades on Latitude and Premium Economy (Flexible) fares.
eUpgrade add-ons, or a supplementary cash payment, may apply. eUpgrade add-ons are priced in CAD and are tax-inclusive.
