Japan’s International Tourist Tax

Japan has introduced an International Tourist Tax, which will be outlined below.

When does it come into effect?

The tax comes into effect for flights departing on or tickets purchased on January 7th, 2019 and thereafter.

 - The tax is charged with airfare at time of ticket purchase.

 - It will be applied even if changes are made after the date it comes into effect.

Set amount (All Japanese domestic airports)

Passengers departing on international routes: 1,000 yen (exempt from consumer tax)

 - The same amount is charged for adults and children (children under two years of age are exempt)

 - Passengers who transfer from one international route to another international route using the same air ticket and depart within 24 hours are exempt.
