Indigenous sacred and ceremonial items

We endeavor to observe the utmost respect when handling and transporting Indigenous sacred and ceremonial items.

If you plan on travelling with a sacred or ceremonial item, please reach out to us at least 24 hours before your flight1. Our contact centre agents will work with you to determine the best way to transport your belongings safely.

When you call us, you will have the opportunity to share:

the significance of the sacred or ceremonial item

its dimensions and how it will be carried

the proper protocol to follow in its handling and transportation

We will use the information you provide to determine the safest and most appropriate manner to carry your items in the cabin.2

Extra seat

Should the dimensions of the sacred or ceremonial item require an extra seat, our contact centre agents will assist you in procuring one when you call. On board, attendants will consult with you on how best to use netting to secure the item to the seat, for the security of both passengers and your belongings.

At the airport and on board

At the airport, you’ll be invited to board early to ensure that your items are correctly handled and secured.

On board, our flight attendants will look to you to guide them on the correct protocol to handle your sacred item.

Questions or concerns

If, at any time, you have questions or concerns, please contact us. We’ll be happy to help.

1 Please note that we may not be able to accommodate requests made within 24 hours or at the airport as space may be limited.

2 In circumstances where the sacred or ceremonial item needs to be transported in the checked baggage compartment, our agents will consult with you on their proper handling.
