Are you bringing a dog to the U.S.?

Effective August 1, 2024, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued new entry requirements for dogs entering the U.S. The new steps to follow will depend on where your dog has been over the past 6 months.

Rabies-free or low-risk countries

If, in the past six months, your dog has only been in a rabies-free or low-risk country (e.g. Canada), the one form you’ll need to complete is the CDC Dog Import Form. Your dog will also need to:

  • appear healthy
  • be at least 6 months old
  • have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them

High-risk countries

If, in the past six months, your vaccinated dog has been in a high-risk country, specific CDC rules apply. If your dog is not vaccinated for rabies, and has been in a high-risk country, it will not be allowed to enter the U.S.
